Welcome to the Japan Karate Shoto federation Christchurch Avonhead dojo
Who we are
We practice traditional shotokan karate under the umbrella of the Japan Karate Shoto federation in Japan. We stand in a proud tradition that values personal development, effort, discipline, technical rigour and mastery, in an environment that promotes respect, humility, and peace. Our curriculum is structured so that students are constantly challenged, in a safe and family-friendly environment, to practice and enhance their skills.
What we train
Our training is grounded in three elements:
Kihon are the basic moves, stances, punches, blocks, and kicks that make up the art of karate. We practice them intensively to build muscle memory to ensure that everything we do is done with high precision.
Kata are prescribed patterns of moves and techniques. They simulate combat against imaginary oponents and are used to groove the application of the kihon. The late karate master Asai developed special training kata for JKS to support students to master complex technical moves.
Kumite is fighting, where students learn to apply the karate techniques offensively and defensively. Early on, every attack and defence are prescribed, so there are no surprises and everyone is safe. As students advance, kumite gets more dynamic, until the point of fully free combat at the black belt level.
The full JKS curriculum can be found on the website of JKS Christchurch.
